Coroner report released in school shooting

The Greenville County Coroner has released the autopsy report after a 12-year-old was fatally shot at a middle school on Thursday. Jamari Cortez Bonaparte Jackson died of a gunshot wound to the chest at 1:05 pm at the hospital, the report said. The Tanglewood Middle School student was shot inside the school at about 12:20 pm, the report said. “Deputy Coroners responded to Tanglewood Middle School in reference to a shooting where the victim had been transported to Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital,” Coroner Parks Evans said. “The victim was identified as Jamari Cortez Bonaparte-Jackson, a 12-year-old, Black, male. Jamari succumbed to his injury and was pronounced dead at 13:05 on March 31, 2022. An autopsy was performed on Jamari on April 1, 222, at which time the cause of death was determined to be gunshot of chest with a manner of homicide. Our deepest condolences go out to the family of Jamari as well as the students and staffing of Tanglewood Middle School. active investigation with the Greenville County Coroner’s Office and the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office.”A 12-year-old suspect, who is also a student at the school, is charged in the case. Sheriff Hobart Lewis said the suspect is being charged with murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, possession of a firearm on school property and unlawful possession of a weapon by a person under the age of 18.He said the boy will be taken to the Department of Juvenile Justice, Columbia.”While the motive for the shooting and how the suspect was able to get possession of a firearm is still under investigation, we can confirm that the victim and suspect were familiar with each other and we are confident the incident was isolated,” Lewis said.
